The best master’s thesis in Technology sciences area was recognized Biomedical Engineering master’s program student’s Mantas Vaitiekunas work „Development and investigation of the method for the extraction of bone segments in computed tomography images”, supervised by Biomedical Engineering Institute research associate A. Sakalauskas. The thesis was initiated in cooperation with Vilnius Implantology Center and orthognathic surgeon PhD S. Grybauskas. While preparing thesis, an important problem in orthognathic surgery was solved – very precise 3D jaw segments extraction (segmentation) algorithm from the CT images was found. The importance of correctly extracting 3D jaw segments from the series of CT images is required for the successful planning of orthognathic surgery and therefore – the final result. The results were presented at two scientific conferences.
At present M. Vaitiekunas successfully continue his education in PhD studies on Electrical and electronic engineering sciences area at KTU Biomedical Engineering Institute and further develops master’s thesis topic.
